CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - The Marian University men's tennis team won its fifth match of the spring as the Knights earned a 7-2 road win at Wabash College on Saturday afternoon. The Knights improved to 16-7 overall, while Wabash dropped to 11-8 on the year.
The Knights opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Mitchell Trammel
and junior Tyler Scanlan
teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while freshmen Taylor Kinney
and Jack Hiatt
picked up an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles to give MU the lead. Freshmen Jason Denton
and Ryan Heuer
battled at No. 1 doubles, but dropped their match by a 9-7 score to make it 2-1.
The Knights took over in the singles competition, however. Scanlan opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to make it 3-1 before Trammel won his 20th straight match, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles to make it 4-1. Hiatt gave MU the win with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles as the score moved to 5-1.
Kinney made it 6-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles before Heuer earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles to make it 7-1. Denton, however, could not pick up the win at No. 1 singles as he battled but fell 5-7, 5-7 to make the final score 7-2 in favor of the Knights.
MU will remain on the road when the Knights head to the University of St. Francis (Ill.) next Saturday for a 1 p.m. first serve.
