Sophomore Hannah Knust (center) and junior Lauren Paras fell 8-6 to the NCAA D-I Summit League champions on Friday.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The No. 21-ranked Marian University women's tennis team traveled to Fort Wayne to take on the reigning NCAA Division I Summit League champion IPFW Mastodons at Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club on Friday afternoon. The Knights suffered a 7-0 defeat to IPFW, but head coach Cassie Mackell
was optimistic after the match.
"We did a lot of things right mentally," said Mackell. "We knew where to put our shots and we were able to put them there. IPFW is a good program and I like giving the ladies the opportunity to play against strong competition. I was especially pleased with how our doubles teams fought against a very strong program today."
The No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Hannah Knust
and junior Lauren Paras
battled to an 8-6 defeat, but the team fought throughout the match. Junior Brittney Horlacher
also fought at No. 2 singles to send the match to a second set tiebreaker. She ultimately fell 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), but coach Mackell saw her ability to fight as critical to improving as a program moving forward.
The match was the 14th straight win for the Mastodons as they improved to 20-7, while MU fell to 15-9 on the year.
The Knights will close the 2012-13 season when they take on Davenport University (15-8) at the MU Tennis Courts on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
