INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian University men's tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the Crossroads League Tournament Tuesday after a 6-3 victory over fifth-seeded Goshen.
The Knights came out to the MU Tennis Courts with a level of excitement and intensity that hadn't been seen yet this year, and it paid off. The Knights went 2-1 in doubles and 4-2 in singles play.
Sophomore Jason Denton
and freshman Marty Pochop
moved to 8-5 on the year after they battled at No. 1 doubles and picked up an 8-5 win. Junior Mitchel Trammel and freshman Danny Albert
also moved to 8-5 on the year after they picked up the other MU victory in doubles within an 8-4 match at No. 2. Senior Nick Batuello
and sophomore Taylor Kinney
fell at No. 3 in an 8-3 match.
In singles play, MU had several good battles with Denton winning at No. 2 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) and Pochop taking home a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory at No. 5. After the wins, Denton is now 10-5 on the year, while Pochop sits at 8-4. Junior Mitchell Trammel
moved to 10-3 on the year after he was the first Knight off the courts, as he won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Sophomore Ryan Heuer
finished off the match with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 6.
The Knights now advance to the semifinal round of the league tournament to face No. 1 Grace College. The match will take place at Grace College with the first serve time to be announced.
