Junior Zach Hilton earned his first career collegiate varsity singles win on Thursday morning.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Marian University men's tennis team moved back over the .500 mark with a decisive 9-0 victory over Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Thursday morning at the Star Island Resort in Kissimmee, Fla.
Junior Zach Hilton headlined the MU performance after he picked up his first career collegiate varsity singles victory. Head coach Steve Mackell gave freshman Marty Pochop a rest in the singles competition and Hilton earned the start at No. 6 singles after the lineup was bumped up a spot. Hilton delivered in style with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Sophomore Taylor Kinney moved up to No. 5 singles and improved to 2-1 on the year, 5-4 overall, with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Sophomore Ryan Heuer also moved up a spot to No. 4 singles and picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win to move to 11-8 on the season.
The top three in the lineup remained in their normal positions and completed the sweep for MU. Sophomore Jack Hiatt moved to 13-9 on the year with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, while freshman Danny Albert improved to 8-14 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Jason Denton dropped his first set, 3-6, but poured it on in the final two sets with a pair of 6-0 victories to give MU the sweep.
The doubles competition saw MU earn wins at all three positions. Senior Nick Batuello and Kinney picked up an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles to improve to 11-10 in 2013-14, while Heuer and Albert moved to 3-4 on the season with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Denton and Pochop moved to 12-12 in 2013-14 with an 8-3 victory to seal the sweep.
The Knights (11-10) are currently 2-2 on their spring trip and will close the trip on Friday afternoon when they take on Webber International University (Fla.)
