KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Marian University men's tennis team closed its 2014 spring trip with a 6-3 defeat to Webber International University (Fla.), which is receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll, at Oak Street Park in Kissimmee, Fla., on Friday afternoon.

The Knights dropped back to .500 at 11-11 with the defeat and closed the spring trip with a 2-3 mark.

The match opened with MU falling behind 2-1 after the doubles competition. Freshman Marty Pochop and sophomore Jason Denton earned an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, but sophomore Ryan Heuer and freshman Danny Albert dropped their match at No. 2 doubles, 0-8, and senior Nick Batuello and sophomore Taylor Kinney fell at No. 3 doubles, 2-8.

The singles competition was tight as the Knights took WIU to three sets in two of the matches and earned a pair of victories. Denton earned a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win at No. 1 singles, while Heuer earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.

Albert dropped his match at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 1-6, and Pochop fell at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 4-6, to make the score 4-3 in favor of WIU. Sophomore Jack Hiatt took his opponent to a third set in a 6-3, 5-7, 4-6 defeat to score the Warriors the decisive point. Kinney fell at No. 6 singles in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 0-6, to make the final score 6-3.

The Knights will head to Grand Rapids, Mich., on March 22 to take on 21st-ranked Davenport University at 8:30 a.m. before taking on Cornerstone University at  2 p.m.
