GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Marian University men's tennis team fell at the hands of No.20-ranked Davenport on Saturday, 6-3.


The Knights were swept in doubles play on Saturday. Sophomore Jason Denton and freshman Marty Pochop fell at No. 1 singles, 8-2. Then at No. 2 doubles freshman Danny Albert and sophomore Ryan Heuer fell 8-2, while senior Nick Batuello and sophomore Taylor Kinney were defeated at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

The Knights played several close matches in singles play on Saturday, but MU came up just short after winning three of the six singles matches. MU's three defeats in singles play came at No.1 where Denton fell 6-3, 6-3, No.2 where Albert fell 6-2, 6-2 and at No. 3 where sophomore Jack Hiatt lost in a close match 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-2.

The Knights then went on to pick up victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. All three singles victories for the Knights were highly contested. Pochop won at No. 4 singles 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, while Heuer won at No. 5 singles 2-6, 6-2, 10-8. Lastly, Kinney won at No. 6 singles in another close match 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 10-6.

The Knights will be back in action on March 25 when they travel to No. 23 Olivet Nazarene.
