INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking five-set Crossroads League match to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Friday night at the Physical Education Center. The Knights and Cougars went the distance with MVNU and the Cougars posted a 22-25, 27-29, 25-19, 26-24, 15-9 comeback win to send MU to a 3-9 overall record and an 0-3 mark in league play.

Four Knights tallied double figures in kills, and a trio of Knights notched double-doubles to lead MU. Sophomore Lauren Gregory registered 12 kills and 16 digs, while freshman McKenzie Mason notched a team-high 16 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Maddie Heidenreich notched a team-high 27 assists and added 12 digs, while freshman Julie Hoying added 20 assists.

Senior Megen Ruff added 14 kills, while sophomore Emily Graves registered 11 kills and eight total blocks (two solo). Sophomore Taylor Greenan notched a team-high 20 digs, while freshman AlyxaKay Shields added 19 digs in defense.

The Knights opened the match by winning the first two sets in a pair of close affairs. MU outhit the Cougars in set one and had 14 kills to earn a 25-22 win. MU had to battle in the second set as they scored on a match-high 23 kills to earn a 29-27 second-set victory to take a 2-0 lead.

After the intermission, however, the Cougars cleaned up their offense and the MU defense could not adapt. The Cougars took set three by a 25-19 score before earning a 26-24 win in set four to tie the match. The Knights hit a combined .079 (24-16-101) in sets three and four with 16 combined hitting errors, but the Cougars hit .140 (27-14-93) over the same span to knot the score at 2-2 and send the match to a decisive fifth set.

MU could get little going in the deciding set as they hit just .069 (5-3-29) in the set compared to MVNU's .370 (11-1-27). The Cougars earned the 15-9 set win and completed the comeback win to move to 10-1 on the year and 3-0 in league play.

The Knights will get back on the court on Saturday afternoon when they take on Taylor University (9-3; 1-2 CL) at the Physical Education Center. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. and LIVE STATS will be available via the MUKNIGHTS LIVE portal at MUKNIGHTS.com.
