INDIANAPOLIS - On the strength of sophomore Lauren Gregory's 12 kills, the Marian University volleyball team earned its third Crossroads League victory of the season in a three-set sweep of Huntington University, 26-24, 25-17, 25-22, at the Physical Education Center on Saturday afternoon. MU is now 6-12 overall and 3-6 in league play as the second half of the season gets underway on Tuesday.

Gregory notched 12 kills and had a hitting percentage of .440 to lead the MU attach. She also added four digs and two block assists in defense.

Freshman McKenzie Mason finished with 11 kills and a .320 hitting percentage, while freshman Ericka Ham notched eight kills and eight digs. Sophomore Maddie Heidenreich registered 20 assists ,while freshman Julie Hoying added 17 assists. Heidenreich also added six digs in defense. Freshman AlyxaKay Shields notched a team-high 16 digs, while sophomore Emily Graves had four blocks (two solo) in defense. Shields also added three service aces for MU.

Ham pocketed five of her eight kills in the first set to lead MU to the 26-24 victory. MU trailed by as much as five, 11-6, early in the first set, but made the late comeback and tied the score at 21-21 on a kill by freshman Crystal Williams. MU had a trio of match points before HU closed the gap and tied it at 24-24. Back-to-back Forester errors closed the 26-24 win and gave MU a 1-0 lead. Shields had nine of her digs in the first set.

The second set had the teams trade points before the Knights went on a short run to open a 10-6 lead. HU went on a 4-0 run to tie the score and, after MU took an 11-10 lead, went on a 3-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. With the score 15-13 in favor of HU, a Gregory kill sparked a 6-0 run and gave MU a 19-15 lead. HU would score back-to-back points before the Knights closed the set with the final six points for the 25-17 win. Gregory had five kills and a hitting percentage of .500 to lead MU. Mason added four kills, while Heidenreich and Ham each had five digs.

The third set featured eight ties and three lead changes and neither team wanted to secure the set. Finally, with the score tied a 21-21, MU scored four of the final five points to complete the sweep and snap a two-match losing slide. Mason registered five kills in the set, while Gregory added four and Willliams notched three.

The Knights will embark on a long road swing as they will head to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (12-5; 5-4 CL) on Tuesday and will remain on the road through October 11. First serve from Mount Vernon, Ohio is slated for 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Ariel Arena.
