INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking five-set defeat to the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 27-29, 5-15, at the Physical Education Center on Wednesday night. MU is now 8-18 on the year and 3-9 in league play.

Freshman Ericka Ham registered a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs in defense. Freshman McKenzie Mason tallied 15 kills and added six digs, while sophomore Emily Graves had 11 kills and four total blocks. Freshman Julie Hoying also notched a double-double with 25 assists, which was a team-high, and 11 digs in defense. Sophomore Maddie Heidenreich added 22 assists and six digs, while freshman AlyxaKay Shields added a team-high 13 digs.

MU started well as the attack was working and gave the Knights a 14-8 lead in the first set. USF battled back to tie it at 20-20 and two more times before the Knights closed the 25-23 set win on a Mason kill. She hit .750 with six kills to lead MU in set one.

The second set saw four ties and four lead changes. With MU leading 11-10, the Cougars scored three straight to take a 13-10 lead. After MU battled back to 13-12, the Cougars went on a 10-3 run to take a 23-15 lead. MU fought back, however, as the Knights staved off four set points to close it to 24-19, but USF was able to close out the set to tie the match at 1-1. Ham led MU in the set with six kills.

The third set saw MU storm out to a seven-point lead, 11-4, and against at 16-9. However, USF, again, came back to cut it to 18-14. The Cougars trimmed away at the lead, but MU would eventually close out the 25-20 win to take a 2-1 lead. Mason notched four kills in the set for MU.

The fourth set was where the tide turned. The teams traded points back-and-forth throughout the set, which featured 15 ties and eight lead changes. MU had a 24-22 lead and was serving for match point when USF scored two straight to send it to extra points. The teams traded points until, with the score tied 27-27, a USF ace and an MU attack error sealed the set and tied the match at 2-2. Ham and Graves each had five kills in the set.

The fifth and decisive set was all Cougars. USF opened with a 6-1 run and never looked back as MU could only muster five points in a 15-5 defeat to give the Cougars the 3-2 win, its second over MU in 2014. Freshman Crystal Williams, Graves and sophomor Lauren Gregory each had a kill for MU in the set.

The Knights will be back on the court when they host Goshen College (11-9; 6-6 CL), which was a straight-set winner on Wednesday, on Friday night at the Physical Education Center. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. and the match will be video-streamed LIVE in the MUKNIGHTS LIVE portal at
