INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University volleyball team endured a weekend of highs and lows as the Knights battled to a win in five sets on Friday night, but could not close out a two-set lead in a five-set defeat on Saturday evening with both matches at the Physical Education Center in Indianapolis.

The Knights earned a 20-25, 25-12, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15 win over Goshen College on Friday night before they suffered a 25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 24-26, 11-15 defeat to Bethel College on Saturday evening. MU fell to 9-19 on the season and 4-10 in Crossroads League play with the split.

On Friday night, the Knights fell behind quickly with a first-set defeat, but were able to pick up wins in sets two and three before a set four defeat. The decisive set had to go to extra points, but MU battled for the victory.

Freshman McKenzie Mason led the Knights with a team-high 17 kills, while sophomore Lauren Gregory added 14 kills and freshman Ericka Ham tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Freshman AlyxaKay Shields notched 36 digs in defense for MU, while sophomore Maddie Heidenreich notched 26 assists.

On Saturday evening, the Knights opened a two-set lead, but could not close the Pilots out in three sets. The teams went back-and-forth in the fourth set before Bethel earned the win and carried the momentum into the fifth set for the 3-2 victory.

Gregory led the way for MU with a team-high 14 kills, while Mason added 12 kills and eight digs. Ham notched another double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Shields added 17 digs to lead MU. Heidenreich and freshman Julie Hoying tallied 24 and 23 assists, respectively.

The Knights will remain at home when Grace College comes to the Physical Education Center on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. first serve. It is Senior Night and the lone senior, Megen Ruff, will be recognized for her contribution to MU volleyball over her four seasons. The match will be video-streamed LIVE in the MUKNIGHTS LIVE portal at MUKNIGHTS.com.
