INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University volleyball team opened its 2015 home season and the Crossroads League season with a four-set victory over Goshen College at the Physical Education Center on Friday night. The Knights recovered from a tough first set to earn a 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-16 victory over the Maple Leafs to move to 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in league play.

Sophomore Frannie Stephenson turned in a career match with a match- and career-high 25 kills, while sophomore Julie Hoying tallied a double-double with a career-high 55 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Ericka Ham also tallied 12 kills and six digs in defense. Sophomore McKenzie Mason added 12 kills and a block, while junior Vanessa Lay led the MU defense with a match-high 18 digs.

In the opening set, MU took a 12-8 lead only to see the Maple Leafs battle back to eventually close the first set out with a 25-20 win. In the second set, the Knights fell behind quickly as Goshen was able to take a 10-5 lead. MU fought back to tie the score three times before taking a 24-19 lead on four straight kills by Stephenson. Goshen staved off four set points to close the lead to 24-23 before Stephenson finished off the 25-23 win to tie the match.

Similar to the second set, the third set was more of the same. The Leafs jumped in front with a 10-6 lead before the Knights were able to come back and tie the score at 12-12, then, with a 19-16 lead, the Knights tallied six of the final seven points to take the 25-23 win and take a 2-1 lead in the match. The teams went back and forth in the fourth set as it featured 10 ties before MU took a 14-11 lead. The Leafs stayed in the set before MU scored eight of the last nine points to close out a 25-16 win and seal the 3-1 win.

MU will hit the road when the Knights head to Spring Arbor on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. first serve in Spring Arbor, Mich.
