SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Marian University volleyball team earned its second straight victory as the Knights went on the road and swept through Spring Arbor, 25-19, 25-16, 25-14, to move to 2-1 on the year and 2-0 in Crossroads League play.

Sophomore Frannie Stephenson led the way for the Knights with a match-high 14 kills, while sophomore Julie Hoying added 25 assists and seven digs for MU. Junior Vanessa Lay tallied a match-high 15 digs, while junior Emily Graves notched a solo block and two block assists for the MU defense.

In the opening set, the Cougars jumped in front before MU battled back to tie the set at 6-6. An SAU ball-handling error sparked a 4-0 MU run and pushed the score to 10-6. After a MU attack error ended the run, a kill by Graves sparked another 4-0 run to put the Knights up 14-7. The MU lead would get as high as eight at 20-12 before the Knights closed out the 25-19 win to take the 1-0 lead.

The same story unfolded in the second set as SAU took an early lead, but the Knights would storm back and overtake the Cougars. Leading 11-8, the Knights went on a 5-0 run to open a 16-8 lead and would push the lead to as high as 20-10. The Cougars would claw to within seven, but MU would close out the 25-16 win with an SAU error to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

The third set turned out to be a more back-and-forth affair as the teams played to five ties over the first 12 points before MU went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. The set-changer would come after SAU went back-to-back to cut it to 12-8. An SAU error was followed by a service ace by Lay to spark a 5-0 run to push the lead to 17-9. MU would not look back as they would overpower the Cougars and earn the 25-14 set win and grab the road league sweep.

The Knights (2-1; 2-0 CL) will return to John Grimes Court at the Physical Education Center on Friday night when they host 18th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University (9-2; 2-0 CL). The volleyball team is calling for all fans to wear their gold in a GOLD RUSH at the P.E. Center.
