HILTON HEAD, South Carolina - The Marian College men's tennis team dropped its first match of the spring season on Thursday as Defiance defeated the Knights, 8-1, in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Sophomore
Brice Fairchild (New Castle, Indiana/Tri) was the only Knight to pick up a victory and he did so at No. 1 singles. Fairchild won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Junior
Joe Nelson (Indianapolis/Cathedral) fell at No. 2 singles, 6-7 (1-7), 4-6, and teamed with junior
Jeff Graf (Sunman, Indiana/East Central) at No. 1 doubles for a 4-8 defeat.
Graf also fell at No. 3 singles, 0-6, 1-6.
Freshman
Cory Rayhill (Loogootee, Indiana/Loogootee) fell at No. 4 singles in straight sets, 3-6, 1-6, while junior
Stedman Carmony (Arlington, Indiana/Greenfield) fell at No. 5 singles, 6-7 (0-7), 3-6. Carmony also teamed with freshman
Austin Hall (Indianapolis/Lutheran) at No. 3 doubles and fell, 3-8.
Hall also lost his match at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 3-6.
Fairchild and freshman
Matt Hostetler (Shipshewana, Indiana/Westview) fell at No. 2 doubles, 8-9 (2-7).
The Knights close out their spring trip on Friday when they take on Wittenberg University at 12:30 p.m., in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
