CHICAGO – The Marian volleyball team lost two matches to open the 2016 season Friday at the SXU/TCC Tournament in Chicago. The Knights fell to Roosevelt in the first match of the day before losing to St. Francis (Ill.) in the second.


The Knights dropped the season opener Friday afternoon to Roosevelt in three-straight sets. Roosevelt took the first set 25-21 and followed with a 25-18 decision in the second. The Knights battled in the third set, but Roosevelt prevailed, taking the set 28-26 and securing the win.

Julie Hoying led the way for the Knights, finishing with a team-high 12 assists to go along with seven digs. Hoying also recorded two service aces. Vanessa Lay recorded a team-high 12 digs, while Frannie Stephenson had a team-high seven kills. AlyxaKay Shields chipped in with with six kills, and Hannah Trout added five.

"We saw snippets of some really great things," said head coach Ashlee Pritchard. "If we can learn to put those things together in a set, we are going to be very successful this season."

In the second match of the day, the Knights dropped the opening set to St. Francis (Ill.), 25-20. Marian jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but USF battled back. The set turned into a see-saw affair, but a run from St. Francis at the end gave them a 2-0 advantage with another 25-20 set win. In the third set, the two teams traded points late, but three-straight points from USF at the end gave the Fighting Saints a 25-22 decision and 3-0 win.

Lay once again led the team in digs with 22 and Shields had a team-high 12 kills. Maddie Heidenreich recorded seven digs, while Megan Hawley and Madi Heffron each added six. Stephenson recorded five kills in the match.

"We saw tremendous improvement from the first game," said Pritchard. "Things are starting to come together for this team. Tomorrow, I'm looking forward to continuing where we left off."

The Knights will play two more matches Saturday to wrap up the SXU/TCC Tournament. Both matches will be played at Trinity Christian College.
