INDIANAPOLIS – Friday night was a landmark night for Marian University, as they hosted their first ever dual wrestling meet. The Knights won their inaugural home dual meet against Ancilla College 46-6. The meet featured five matches, as Ancilla was forced to forfeit at five weight classes.
The meet also featured CYO wrestling as part of the historic night. Seven matches took place prior to the action between Marian and Ancilla, featuring nine churches from the Indianapolis area.
"It was nice to have a good crowd for our first ever match," said coach Steven Bradley. "It was good to win the matches we won and I am proud of our guys.
"We definitely have to continue to work to get better, and be continue to be aggressive. Overall, this was a satisfying win for the program."
The action started off with the 165 lbs. weight class, featuring freshman Brett Johnson. Johnson won the match by fall at the 2:38 mark in the first period, which would become a recurring event for the Knights. In the second match, freshman Quinn Cecil won again by fall, pinning his opponent 92 seconds (1:32) into the first period. Like Johnson and Cecil, the 184 lbs. weight class featured similar results. Wrestling at 184 tonight was Charlie Hill, who recorded Marian's third pin (1:35) and victory of the night to give Marian a 24-0 lead.
In the heavyweight class, Derek Lewis looked to give Marian their fourth win of the evening. Lewis was winning 6-0 after the first period ended, but got caught on his back 45 seconds into the second period and was pinned (3:45) by Ancilla wrestler Trayshawn Jones. Marian's final wrestler of the evening was Chris Sharp, who made the 125 lbs. an exciting ending to the night. Sharp led 2-1 after the first period, and 10-2 after the second period, leading to his 10-2 major decision victory.
Marian received forfeits from 133, 149, 157, 197 weight classes, while the 141 weight class was a double forfeit for both Marian and Ancilla. Winning by forfeit were Zach Worm (197), Logan Dilbeck (133), Logan Hurley (149), and Trezdon O'Neal (157).
Marian will hit the mats again this Sunday as they travel north to Calumet St. Joseph. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. The next home meet will take place on January 11, as the Knights will host the UIndy Greyhounds.
