Upland, Ind. – The Marian men's basketball team lost Saturday afternoon to No. 7 Taylor University 82-67. The loss brings the Knights record to an overall 9-9 while their Crossroads League record drops to 0-6.
Marian struggled offensively in the first half of Saturday's ball game, as the Knights put up 23 points to Taylor's 38, while shooting 25 percent from the field. Marian hung in with Taylor for the opening minutes of the game, where Marian led 9-7. Then Taylor University went on a run and never looked back, outscoring the Knights 31-14 for the remaining 15 minutes of the half. Along with shooting poor to open the game, Marian struggled to possess the ball, as they committed eight turnovers in the half.
The second half was a much different ball game for the Knights, as they came out of the locker room at halftime shooting at a much better rate. Marian shot 42 percent from the field in the second half and 47 percent from behind the arc, and only committed three turnovers in the half. Marian found themselves trailing by 28 points in the second half, but battled and fought to inch closer to Taylor.
However, no matter how close the Knights got to the Trojans, Taylor found a way to keep the Marian faithful quiet. Taylor held a lead of 20 points or larger for much of the second half before finishing the game ahead by 15.
The lack of depth also hurt the Knights on Saturday, as Marian used a 7-man rotation throughout the game, opposed to their normal 9-man rotation.
Leading the Knights in scoring was Wes Stowers, who dropped a team high 21 points while hitting four three-point shots. Sam Guymon was the only other Knight to score in double figures, as Guymon scored 12 while going 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Jake Mills scored nine points off the bench.
Marian will continue Crossroads League play next Tuesday night, as the Knights travel to Grace College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
