WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Marian men's basketball team had four players score in double figures and the Knights defeated Grace 79-72 for their first Crossroads League victory of the season. Marian is now 10-9 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The Knights relented the first two points of the contest, but answered with a 16-0 run the next four minutes and led 14-2 at the first media timeout. The run would reach 16-0 before Grace found a bucket, but it hardly slowed the Knight offense. Marian made 10 of its first 12 field goal attempts and the Knights built a 16 point lead.
The Lancers whittled the lead down to nine with eight minutes to play in the half and then got it to four with six minutes left. Marian responded by cracking the Grace 2-3 zone and took a 42-31 lead to the locker room. The Knights shot 16-for-30 in the half and connected on six 3-pointers.
Grace opened the second half on a 6-0 run to trim the lead to five, but again Marian would not allow the Lancers to come any closer than that. The Knights pushed the lead back to 10 at the 14 minute mark with a pair of free throws from Wes Stowers. A three from Curtis Green a few moments later made it a 15 point lead.
The lead would grow to as much as 17 for Marian, but Grace had one more run left in them. The Lancers trimmed the lead to 10 with 4:04 to play and Grace then got it to seven with 1:22 to play. However, the Knights made their free throws down the stretch and left the building with their first Crossroads League win of the season.
Stowers led all scorers with 21 points and added four rebounds and five assists. Sam Guymon scored 18 points, while Green added 17 and Andrew Jordan scored 12. Marian was 24-for-52 from the field and 9-for-17 from beyond the arc. Grace outrebounded Marian 31-28 and both teams made 10 turnovers.
