INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian wrestling team took on a quality UIndy team and fell 49-3 Wednesday night at the Physical Education Center in Indianapolis. The loss was Marian's first in the last three matches.
Chris Sharp kicked off the evening for the Knights at the 125 class. UIndy's DJ Smith gained an early 11-1 advantage, and ended up winning by major decision, 15-4. The Knights were forced to forfeit the 133 and 141 bouts, and UIndy's Neal Molloy bested Marian's Logan Hurley by fall at the 149 class.
In the 157 class, Heath Lange defeated Trezdon O'Neal by fall as well. At 165, Brett Johnson grabbed an early 2-1 lead over Barry McGinley, but McGinley tied it up early in the second period. He then took the lead with a two-point takedown late in the period, but Johnson answered with a two point reversal seconds later. In the third, Johnson retook the lead with a one-point escape, but McGinley got riding time to send it to overtime. Johnson picked up the Knights' first win in overtime with a two-point takedown.
At 175, Brandon Kelly defeated Quinn Cecil by fall in the first period. In the 184 bout, Charlie Hill opened with a 6-0 lead over Taylor DeLong in the first minute, but was defeated by fall as well.
The night ended at the 197 class where Zach Worm and Brody Conner dueled. Worm opened the scoring with a two-point takedown and the two went to the second period tied at three. Worm picked up a point with seven seconds left in the second and led by one entering the third. However, Conner earned three points in the first minute of the period and won 7-5.
The Knights will travel to the Missouri Valley Invitational in Marshall, Missouri, Jan. 20-21.
