Winona Lake, Ind. – The Marian women's basketball team defeated Grace College 68-29 Wednesday night, improving their overall season record to 16-3. The Knights shot 46 percent from the field in the game, and defensively forced 24 turnovers. Marian is now 6-1 in the Crossroads League.
The Knights started tonight's contest on fire, opening the game on a 13-4 run. The Knights offense stalled after Grace called a timeout, but maintained their lead entering the second quarter, leading 15-8.
The second quarter continued to go the Knights way, as the defense began to intensify. Marian's defense forced three shot clock violations in the quarter, as well as two of their 10 forced turnovers in the half. Conversely, the Knights continued to shoot lights out. Marian opened the quarter on a 5-0 run, and outscored Grace 14-6 in the period, taking a 29-14 lead to the locker room at halftime.
The Knights did not give any ground as they began the second half of play, opening the quarter on a 6-1 run. In all, the Knights shot an even 50 percent from the field in the quarter and outscored the Lancers 21-8. The Knights' defense continued to be lights out, as they forced another eight turnovers in the third. Marian held their largest lead of the game, 28 points (50-22), entering the fourth quarter after Joana Soeiro drained one from deep to end the period.
The Knights started the final quarter on a hot streak, as Ana Kirby scored five quick points before head coach Katie Gearlds was able to empty the bench for the remainder of the game. Marian's bench continued to keep up the intensity, as they held Grace to only seven points in the fourth quarter. Grace never scored more than eight points in a quarter, and Marian's defense gave up a season low 29 points.
The leading scorer for the Knights was Dejah Cyrus, who scored 16 points off of the bench. Kellie Kirkhoff scored 13 points, while also picking up six assists. Candace Danz chipped in nine points, and Karen Jones led Marian with five rebounds.
Marian will be back in action this Saturday as they host game one of a women and men's basketball doubleheader. Both teams will take on Huntington University, with the women scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
