INDIANAPOLIS - It was a night for celebration Wednesday night on John Grimes Court as the Marian women's basketball team defeated Grace 91-73 to clinch the Crossroads League regular season championship and earn Katie Gearlds her 100th career win.

Whereas Marian stifled the Grace offense in the first meeting of the season, the Lancers held their own in the first quarter of play. Marian came out hot, shooting 60 percent for the quarter, but Grace knocked down eight of its first nine and finished the quarter shooting 75 percent. Still, Jessica Almeida and Joana Soeiro combined for 18 points and helped the Knights to a 27-20 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The beginning of the second quarter belonged to Karen Jones as she scored the first seven points for the Knights and contributed to a 14-2 Marian run. Grace stayed within the 15-point mark for the remainder of the half and trailed by 10 at the break. Jones finished the half as one of three players with nine points, joining Almeida and Soeiro.

The Knights moved the ball extremely well, recording assists on 12 of their 15 field goals in the half. Grace stayed in the game thanks to 52 percent shooting from the field and also hitting 9-of-12 free throws.

Marian got off to a sluggish start in the third quarter, which allowed Grace to pull within six early on. However, the Knights rebounded and took a 14-point lead into the fourth. The strong play of Kellie Kirkhoff throughout the quarter helped the Knights maintain the lead.

Sarah Corbin scored seven-straight points to open the fourth quarter and Marian's lead grew to 20 early in the final frame. Corbin's outburst was another example of the balanced offense for the Knights as six players scored nine or more points and five scored in double figures. Soeiro led the way with 14 points, while Almeida and Candace Danz added 13.

Gearlds reached 100 wins in just her 131st game at the helm of the Knights. The Knights also earned their second-straight conference championship and will be the top seed entering the conference tournament.

Marian will travel to Huntington Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff. Your online source for Marian Athletics, tickets, multimedia, Knight merchandise, photos and more.
