INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian women's basketball team celebrated its seniors in style Saturday afternoon, winning 86-51 over Goshen on Senior Day on John Grimes Court. The win makes Marian 27-3 overall and 17-1 in the Crossroads League.

Marian's defense keyed a hot start for the Knights as they came up with four steals in the first five minutes, which led to easy buckets in transition. Kellie Kirkhoff was the main beneficiary of the havoc as she scored 10 points in the quarter to lead Marian to a 17-15 lead. Kirkhoff knocked down two 3-pointers in the quarter.

The turnover issue was not Goshen's alone though, as the Knights had trouble at the end of the half taking care of the basketball. Both teams had five turnovers by the quarter's end and it allowed Goshen to pull within two after trailing by as much as seven.

In the second quarter, a 3-point barrage midway through helped Marian pull away. Threes from Kirkhoff and Jessica Almeida put Marian up by 14 - its largest lead of the game at that point. The lead held until the halftime break as Marian led 42-29. Kirkhoff ended the half with 15 points, while Almeida chipped in with 11. Marian held Goshen to 37 percent shooting and the Knights hit seven 3-pointers.

Kirkhoff picked up where she left off in the third quarter, draining a three and completing the four-point play after she was fouled on the box out. Jenna Sullivan then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and converted a lay up to stretch Marian's lead to 17. The Knights' full court press worked to perfection, hounding Goshen into several miscues. The press and efficient offense helped Marian to a 31-point lead at the end of the quarter and Kirkhoff ended the third with 23 points.

The Knights cruised through the fourth quarter to win their 15th-straight game of the season. Marian shot 45 percent from the field and knocked down nine 3-pointers. The Knights were also 17-for-19 from the free throw line and outrebounded Goshen 50-31.

Kirkhoff led the Knights with 23 points, while Almeida had 14 and Candace Danz had 13. Marian will host a Crossroads League Tournament game Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Your online source for Marian Athletics, tickets, multimedia, Knight merchandise, photos and more.
