INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian women's basketball team is moving on to the Crossroads League Tournament championship after a 79-50 victory over Grace in the semifinals Friday night on John Grimes Court. The win makes Marian 29-3 overall. In the win Joana Soeiro broke the single-season assists record with her 174th assist of the season.

Marian opened the game on a 6-0 run thanks to four quick points from Joana Soeiro, but the Lancers eventually answered with a 7-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the night. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter and the Knights led 16-15 after a quarter of play. Grace's four early turnovers hurt the Lancers at the beginning of the quarter, but Grace recovered to shoot 50 percent in the quarter.

The Lancers continued to match Marian basket-for-basket in the second quarter and took a five-point lead midway through the quarter. The Knights fought back to tie the game at 29 after a three-point play from Kellie Kirkhoff. Tied at 32 with 40 seconds to play, Ana Kirby hit a corner three, which was followed by back-to-back steals and layups from Kirkhoff and Jessica Almeida. The 7-0 run to end the half gave Marian a 39-32 lead at the break.

Grace shot 52 percent in the half, but the Knights hit six threes in the half. The lead changed 12 times in the half and there were two ties.

Smothering defense keyed a big third quarter for Marian as the Knights held Grace to just four points through the first four minutes of the quarter. During that span, Marian scored 12 points and extended its lead to as much as 15. While Grace was able to break out of the slump in the later minutes of the quarter, Marian's offense kept humming right along and the Knights took a 16-point lead into the fourth.

The lead only grew in the fourth as the Knights were efficient on offense and hounded the Lancers on defense. Marian shot 45 percent from the field and hit 10 threes. Grace shot 38 percent from the field and was just 2-of-11 from 3-point land. The Knights scored 14 points off of 19 Grace turnovers.

Kirby's 19 points led the way for the Knights, while Kirkhoff chipped in with 18 and Almeida added 14. Jenna Sullivan finished with five points and eight rebounds, while Soeiro had eight points and five assists.

The Knights will host St. Francis in the championship game Monday night at 7 p.m. on John Grimes Court. Your online source for Marian Athletics, tickets, multimedia, Knight merchandise, photos and more.
