COSTA MESA, Calif. - The Marian softball team opened the NAIA Tournament on the right foot, defeating Avila (Mo.) 6-1 Monday evening at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California. The win makes Marian 45-4 on the season.

Breena Smith got the start for the Knights and she kept on rolling, working an easy 1-2-3 first inning. Her offense gave her run support right away in the bottom of the inning when Mackenzie Reeder drove in Logan Personett with an infield single. In the second, Smith allowed her first hit of the day, but struck out a pair and the Knights added another run in the bottom of the frame. Vanessa Lay singled to bring in Riley Cripe. The damage could have been worse, but the Knights left the bases loaded.

Smith cruised through the third and then it was Olivia Hoffman's turn to extend the lead once more. She sent a ball to left, which scored Lanie Horen and Reeder to make it 4-0. In the fourth inning it was Reeder's turn to drive in two as she crushed a double to left, which scored Carly Greene and Erica Miller.

The six runs were enough for Smith who pitched through the fifth before being lifted for Grace Lumpkin. After allowing a run on back-to-back hits in the sixth, Lumpkin settled in and closed out Avila to seal the win for Marian. Smith pitched five innings and allowed two hits, while striking out six. At the plate, both Reeder and Personett had three hits.

Marian will move on to face Oregon Tech Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET. The winner will move to the championship game Wednesday. Your online source for Marian Athletics, tickets, multimedia, Knight merchandise, photos and more.
