INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian softball team advanced to the NAIA Tournament Opening Round championship game with a 3-1 win over Oregon Tech Tuesday at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California. The Knights are 46-4 with the win and will have to be beaten twice Wednesday since they are 2-0 so far this week.

Breena Smith turned in another quality game for the Knights, but it took a while for the offense to give her support as Oregon Tech's Loryn Williams matched Smith inning-for-inning through the first four frames. It took just 45 minutes to get through the first four as Smith and Williams hardly faced a threat in that span.

However, in the top of the fifth, Marian was able to get two runs across. After loading the bases, Logan Personett was hit by a pitch to drive in the game's first run and Erica Miller drew a walk one batter later to bring in another run. Oregon Tech was able to get a run back in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff double led to a run on a two-out RBI base hit.

With the lead down to two, Marian's offense went back to work in the top of the seventh and got the run back. Hannah Williams ripped a base hit to right field and she scored on a base hit from Miller to make it 3-1. Smith went back out for the seventh and shut the door on Oregon Tech, sending Marian to the title game Wednesday.

Smith allowed five hits and a run, while striking out eight and walking none. Marian had six hits and Williams and Miller each had two. Sam Pash and Lanie Horen had the other two hits for the Knights.

Marian will play an opponent that is to be determined in the championship Wednesday at 3 p.m. Your online source for Marian Athletics, tickets, multimedia, Knight merchandise, photos and more.
