Gulf Shores, Ala. - The first day of the NAIA Track National Championships are in the books, as Marian's men's track team competed in the 4x100 relay and 200M dash trials. The 4x100 relay punched their ticket to this Saturday's finals, representing Marian's first finals qualifier.

The Knights got the afternoon started in the men's 4x100 relay, and received a strong start from lead-man DeVohn Jackson. Jackson set the tempo for the race, leaving it up to teammates Moussa Conde, Marcellion Gardner, and Sogo Akinyosoye to finish the job. The Knights relay stepped up, running their fastest time of the season, as Akinyosoye crossed the finish line in 40.74 seconds.

Marian finished 0.67 seconds behind Indiana Tech's relay team, finishing their heat in second place. The second place finish was strong enough to qualify for Saturday's finals, as Marian will be the number two seed in the race. Indiana Tech will be the number one seed, while Southern Oregon will be third. Fellow Crossroads League member Bethel College's relay team will be seventh seed in Saturday's finals.

Moussa Conde kept his busy schedule moving, as he also ran in the 200 meter dash. It was a historic race for Conde, as he broke the Marian school record after finishing in 21.26 seconds. Conde tied the school record earlier this year at the Marian Open at 21.29 seconds, sharing the title with Gilberto Leija. Conde finished his heat in third place.

Unfortunately, Conde's run was not fast enough to qualify for the 200M finals, as he missed the cut by .07 seconds. Conde finishes the 2017 outdoor season as the ninth overall in the 200. Conde still has two more events in which he can qualify for the finals, as tomorrow he will compete in the 4x400 relay and the 110 hurdles.
