CLERMONT, Fla. - The Marian softball team saw its season come to a close Saturday with a 6-3 loss to Warner at the NAIA World Series in Clermont, Florida. Marian ends it's season with a 47-6 record, Crossroads League regular season and tournament titles and an NAIA Tournament Opening Round title in the Costa Mesa Bracket.

It was business as usual to start the afternoon as Breena Smith put the Royals down in order in the top of the first and the Knights posted two runs in the bottom of the inning. Riley Cripe, after a stellar game Friday night, drove in the pair of runs with a base hit.

Pitchers ruled for the next four innings and Smith cruised through the fifth and Warner's Chelsie Valentine matched her inning for inning. Smith worked perfect innings in the second, fourth and fifth innings, while allowing just a hit in the third. However, in the top of the sixth, the tide turned as Warner mounted a furious two-out rally.

After two quick ground outs, Warner strung together two singles and a walk to load the bases. A double to deep left field off the bat of Sara Bruno drove in two runs to tie the game and one batter later, Paige Davis tripled down the right field line to score two more. The rally knocked Smith out of the game as the Knights turned to Grace Lumpkin. An error allowed one more run to cross the plate before Marian got out of the inning.

The Knights had no answer in the bottom of the inning as they went down in order and in the top of the seventh Warner scored one more run. A squeeze bunt allowed a run to score and gave the Royals a four-run lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Marian rallied, loading the bases with nobody out. A pop-up was the first out of the inning and kept all runners at their bases, but a fielder's choice allowed a run to score, while also putting the Knights down to their final out. Marian was unable to push across any more runs and the season came to a close.

Marian finishes the season with the highest winning percentage in program history. Your online source for Marian Athletics, tickets, multimedia, Knight merchandise, photos and more.
