Several current, incoming, and graduated Marian University student-cyclists competed at USA Cycling's Mountain Bike National Championships at Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia last week and earned several top results.

Senior Angelina Palermo, current Women's Collegiate Downhill National Champion, finished fifth in both Women's Pro Downhill and Dual Slalom. Palermo has had a solid summer of downhill racing, including a Pro GRT win at Beech Mountain in June, as she prepares to defend her collegiate title this coming fall.

Senior Benjamin Schmutte competed in the endurance disciplines at MTB Nationals, including an eighth-place finish in the Men's Cat 1 19-29 short track cross country race. Schmutte also competed in the stacked Men's U23 cross-country event, finishing 28th.

Junior Katherine Santos mixed it up in both the downhill and cross-country events, riding to a second-place result in the Women's Cat 1 19-29 downhill event and a 12th place finish in the women's U23 cross-country race.

Incoming freshman Caleb Swartz had an excellent campaign at MTB Nationals, earning the National Championship in the Men's Junior 15-18 short track cross country race. Swartz rode the front of the entire race to take a solo win over a field of 50 strong riders.

On the alumni front, assistant coach Jason Blodgett competed in the Pro Men's endurance events, riding to a top-25 finish in the cross country race and a top-50 finish in STXC.

The team will host Collegiate Track Nationals at home at the Major Taylor Velodrome September 14-16 and will race the MWCCC MTB circuit in preparation for Collegiate MTB Nationals in Missoula, Montana, October 20-22.
