KANSAS CITY - The Marian football team will begin the 2017 campaign as the fifth-ranked team in the nation as announced by the NAIA Monday in the preseason coaches' poll. The Knights accumulated 305 points overall.

In-state rival and defending national champion, St. Francis, will begin the season ranked number one. The two teams will meet at Marian Sept. 30 at 6:05 p.m. The Cougars garnered 366 points and were followed in the poll by Baker, Reinhardt and Morningside. Marian ranks fifth while Montana Tech, Eastern Oregon, Lindsey Wilson, Grand View and Tabor round out the top 10.

Robert Morris will begin the season ranked 13th and will come to St. Vincent Field for the Knights' home opener Sept. 9. St. Xavier is ranked 24th and Marian will travel to Chicago to face the Cougars in the season opener Aug. 31. St. Ambrose is receiving votes and will face Marian at home Oct. 7 at 1:05 p.m.
