CHICAGO - The Marian volleyball team opened the St. Xavier / Trinity Christian Tournament with a split as the Knights defeated Roosevelt 3-0 before falling to St. Xavier 3-2 in a five-set thriller to close the night. Marian is 2-1 on the season.

Game 1: Marian 3-0 Roosevelt

Marian breezed right past the Lakers in the opening match of the night, winning easily in three sets by scores of 25-7, 25-11 and 25-18. The Knights played a clean game, making only six attacking errors and three service errors, while capitalizing on 12 Roosevelt attacking errors and 13 service errors.

Frannie Stephenson led Marian in kills with 13, while Kacee Salyers added 11. Vanessa Lay was her usual self, racking up a game-high 19 digs and Madi Heffron and Julie Hoying each tallied double-digit assists with 17 and 13, respectively. Salyers was exceptional with four service aces. The team had seven total. Marian had 42 kills as a team and assisted on 38 of them, while Stephenson, Anne Strevels and Hannah Trout each had a block.

Marian led almost the entire way with the lead only changing twice in the second set. The game was tied eight different times with six of those occasions coming in the second set.

Game 2: St. Xavier 3-2 Marian

Marian's nightcap was a back-and-forth battle with the hosts that ultimately ended with the Knights' first loss of the season. St. Xavier jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 25-21, but Marian fought back to tie it up with a 25-20 win in the second. The Cougars dominated the third set with a 25-11 win, but once again Marian answered with a 25-17 win of their own. However, St. X closed out the match, winning 15-12 in the fifth and final set.

The Knights' attack was balanced and AlyxaKay Shields was the lone Knight with double figure kills, finishing with 10. Stephenson added nine, Trout had eight and Salyers finished with seven. After making just six attacking errors in the first match of the night, Marian made 23 against the Cougars.

Hoying led Marian with 17 assists and Heffron chipped in with 15, while Lay's 26 digs led Marian. Hoying added 21 and Megan Hawley had 10. Strevels led Marian with five block assists and the Knights had five other players record at least one. The match went back-and-forth all night, ending with 17 ties and six lead changes.

Marian will finish the tournament at Trinity Christian Saturday. The Knights take on TCC at 10 a.m. and St. Francis (Ill.) at noon. Your online source for Marian Athletics, tickets, multimedia, Knight merchandise, photos and more.
