CHICAGO, Ill. - The Marian Knights volleyball team split their Saturday matchups in the St. Xavier/Trinity Christian Crossover tournament. The Knights dropped their morning match to Trinity Christian 3-2 in five sets, but bounced back to knock off St. Francis (Ill.) 3-0 in the second game. The split gives the Knights a 2-2 record for the weekend, while moving their season mark to 3-2. 

Game 1: Marian 2-3 Trinity Christian

Marian began the morning with a back and forth battle against the hosts that eventually ended in the Knights second loss of the season. The Knights got out to an early 6-3 lead over the Trolls, but the home team did not give in. Scoring in small increments, Trinity took over the lead, ultimately winning 28-26. After dropping the first, Marian came roaring back, dominating the second set 25-17. 

Trinity Christian took the third set 25-21, but again Coach Ashlee Pritchard's group showed grit and toughness in the fourth round. Jumping out to another big lead, Marian took the fourth 25-20, forcing the fifth set. In the fifth set, Trinity showed their durablilty, pulling out a 15-10 win, taking the match three sets to two. 

In the morning action Frannie Stephenson was one of four Marian players with double-digit kills, leading the way with 16. Anne Strevels (11), Hannah Trout (10), and Kacee Salyers (10) also were in double-digits for kills. Julie Hoying and Madi Heffron led the passing category, recording 30 and 25 assists, respectively. Vanessa Lay led the team with 21 digs, while Megan Hawley had 14 and Salyers had 13. 

Game 2: Marian 3-0 St. Francis (Ill.)

Marian finished their Chicago weekend on a positive note, bouncing back from losing two straight matches to sweep St. Francis (Ill.). Marian started the second match strong, opening up with a Julie Hoying ace, as well as a 3-0 start. The Knights continued to show their dominance in the first set, leading the entire way to come out with a 25-21 victory. In the second set, the game was more even, with both teams trading points until the very end. A Sarah Clem kill gave the Knights a lead for good, coming out with the 26-24 win.

The final set of the match showed a new level of dominance from Marian in the young season, as the team started the round with an 8-0 lead. Despite allowing the Saints to get back into the match, it was too late as the Knights had a wire-to-wire victory, ending the sweep with a 25-21 final. 

Frannie Stephenson led in the second game with 10 kills, while Kacee Salyers had nine. Hoying recorded a double-double, posting 16 assists and 10 digs. Megan Hawley led Marian with 17 digs, while Vanessa Lay had 14. As a team the visitors led the match with seven service aces and five total blocks. 

The Knights will be on the road next Wednesday when they square-off against Indiana University - East. The action in Richmond will begin at 7:00 p.m.
