SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- The Marian College baseball team traveled to Spring Arbor, Mich., for a doubleheader against the Cougars at Hank Burbridge Field on Tuesday. The Knights were swept by the No. 20-ranked Cougars, 4-3 in game one and 5-0 in game two. Marian's record falls to 7-13-1 overall and 3-2 in MCC play.

The Knight offense struggled in game one as the Cougars opened a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a wind-aided two-run homerun over the right field wall. SAU added one more in the bottom of the fifth as the Knights could only muster two hits through five innings. However, Marian turned the tide in the top of the sixth.

Junior Kevin Shepherd (Fortville, Ind./Ancilla JC) struck out swinging with one out, but reached first base on a dropped third strike. Senior Joel Strode (Canton, Ill./Canton)Mike Keltz (Avon, Ind./Avon) loaded the bases with a one-out walk. Sophomore Chad Morris (Lebanon, Ind./Univ. of Vermont)
followed with a single while freshman followed with an RBI-single scoring Shepherd to bring the score line to 3-1.

Senior Bryston Bangel (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central) followed with a two-out, two-run single to the left center field gap which brought Strode and Keltz plateward. However, he was thrown out at second in an attempt to get into scoring position. The Knights had tied the score 3-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The even score line did not last long as the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth inning was deposited over the left field wall to give the Cougars the lead and subsequent 4-3 victory.

Senior Jeff Brunette (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) had another strong complete game outing, but fell for the first time this season. He surrendered four runs on nine hits in his fourth complete game of the season to fall to 3-1.

In game two the offensive woes continued as the Knights suffered a 5-0 defeat. The Knights were only able to muster one baserunner and that came as a walk to Strode in the top of the first inning.

Marian gets back on the field when it hits the road for a single nine-inning game against Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Ind. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
