INDIANAPOLIS - Coming off a big win over Siena Heights Wednesday, the Marian women's soccer team kept the train rolling Friday night as they took down NCAA Division I opponent Eastern Illinois 1-0. The win marks the fifth at home for the Knights this season, as well as the fourth straight overall. Marian now boasts a record of 5-2 this season.

In a game that featured very few shots, Marian made the most of the opportunities they received. In the first half the Knights outshot the Panthers 3-2, while besting them in corner kicks 2-1. The Knights had two good looks in the period with one coming from Chloe Ulmer. Defensively, starting goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt protected the net for 30 solid minutes, before being taken out of the game with an injury sustained after colliding with a Panther.

Marian kept the aggressive edge in the second half, increasing their shots total by five. The Knights' Maria Farmer had an opportunity to get the first goal of the night with a missle sent toward the net, but she missed just wide and the ball clanged off the post. With 29:01 remaining in the game, Farmer drew foul in the box to set up Courtney Denney's golden moment. Denney was rewarded with the penalty kick, and she capitalized by beating the goalie to give Marian the 1-0 lead.

The Knights played stout defense after getting the lead, defending throw-in opportunities left and right from Eastern Illinois. Brenna Malatestinic came in to relieve Schmidt after her injury, and provided a solid wall in the net. Malatestinic made four saves in the game, three coming in the final 45 minutes.

Ulmer and Denney led the Knights in shots on goal at two each, while Farmer also had two shots. Holly Collingbourne tallied one shot on goal for the home team. Both teams combined for eight shots, with Marian leading in corners 5-2.

Marian will play again on short rest as they face IUPUI on Sunday afternoon. The game is an exhibition for the home team, with the game set to kickoff at 5 PM from St. Vincent Field. Your online source for Marian Athletics, tickets, multimedia, Knight merchandise, photos and more.
