INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Marian College baseball team played host to Mid-Central College Conference foe Bethel College on Friday in a rescheduled doubleheader from Thursday. The games were scheduled for Mishawaka, Ind., but ended up at Marian Baseball Field. The result was not what the Knights were looking for as Bethel swept the twinbill, 5-3 and 4-2.

After the first six innings saw Bethel build a 5-0 lead, the Knight offense finally came alive in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and none out, senior Jason Moon (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) brought senior Bryston Bangel (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central), who singled to open the inning, home with a RBI-ground out.

Freshman Mike Keltz (Avon, Ind./Avon) followed with an RBI-single that brought home sophomore Josh Terrell (Richmond, Va./Danville JC), and senior Derek Malikian (Charlottesville, Va./New River CC) hit a sacrifice fly to score senior Joel Strode (Canton, Ill./Canton) to cut the deficit to 5-3 with a man on and two out.

Sophomore Chad Morris (Lebanon, Ind./Vermont) reached on an error to put two on with two out, but the rally was quelled and the Knights fell 5-3 in the opener.

In game two the Knights got on the board first after Bangel singled to right and stole second. After a pair of ground outs and a walk, Keltz singled to left to score Bangel and stake Marian to a 1-0 lead. Bethel immediately responded to knot the game, 1-1.

Marian regained the lead in the top of the third. Terrell ripped a double down the left field line and, once again, Keltz hit the ball to the right side to score Terrell with an RBI-ground out. Bethel was able to tie the game in the bottom half of the third on a sacrifice fly.

The Pilots notched one more run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-2 lead. The two-run lead was all the Bethel pitching staff would need as it held the Knights to one hit over the final four innings to pick up the 4-2 win.

Freshman Patrick Midla (Indianapolis, Ind./Bethesda Christian) picked up the loss in game two, but threw a complete game allowing just three earned over six innings while striking out three and walking just one.

Senior Jeff Brunette (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) allowed just five hits and two earned runs over five innings of work to fall to 4-2 on the season.

Keltz finished the afternoon with two hits and three RBI while Bangel finished the day 4-for-7 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Terrell also added three hits over the doubleheader.

The Knights fall to 9-18-1 overall and 5-6 in the MCC and are scheduled to hit the diamond at home on Saturday. The Knights face Goshen College at 1 p.m.
