HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- The Marian College baseball team traveled to
Huntington University on Tuesday afternoon on a four-game losing skid,
but two seniors stepped up and led the Knights to a crucial sweep of
the Foresters, 1-0 and 4-1.
Senior
Jeff Brunette (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard)
picked up his fifth victory, second shutout, and seventh complete game
of the season in game one on Tuesday. The righthander scattered five
hits over seven innings and had total command over his pitches as he
struck out four and walked none.
Brunette received the only support he would need from a manufactured run by an industrial Knight offense.
Sophomore
Chad Morris (Whitestown, Ind./Lebanon) singled to lead off the third and junior
Andre Hall (Indianapolis, Ind./Broad Ripple) sacrificed him into scoring position. After Morris stole third, junior
Josh Gerald (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Morris as the winning, and only, and only run of the game.
Game two was much of the same for the Knights as senior
Jason Moon (Anderson, Ind./Anderson)
earned his second victory of the season with a complete game,
three-hitter and surrendered just one unearned run over seven innings.
While the Knights had just five hits in game two, each of them counted. Senior
Bryston Bangel (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central) walked to lead off the game and after senior
Derek Malikian (Charlottesville, Va./New River CC) reached on an error and senior
Joel Strode (Canton, Ill./Canton)
singled, the bases were loaded. Moon stepped up to help his own cause
and hit a long sacrifice fly to score Bangel to stake himself a 1-0
lead.
Huntington scored to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third, but the Knights were just about to hit their peak.
After Morris walked to lead off the top of the fourth, Gerald singled.
With two on and no one out, Bangel ripped an RBI-double to score
Morris. Malikain walked and Strode followed with an RBI-single to score
Gerald. However, the lead could have been more but a solid throw from
center caught the speedy Bangel at the plate. The Knights were up 3-1
and that was all Moon would need.
Marian tacked one more on in the top of the sixth when Bangel led off
with a walk and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Malikian
singled him home for the insurance run and a 4-1 win as Moon shut down
the Foresters for the final two innings.
Bangel led the Knights by going 3-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored
and a stolen base. Strode added two hits and an RBI.
The Knights take to the diamond on Wednesday when they play host to the
Ravens of Anderson University under the lights at Marian Baseball
Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
