Hilton Head, S.C. - The Marian women's tennis team got a big win in their first match of the spring season Sunday, as they took down Lawrence Tech 8-1. Marian swept doubles play while taking five of six singles matches. The win improves Marian's dual match record to 10-2 this season.
The Knights started their spring break on fire, as they dominated the doubles portion of their opening match. At No. 1 doubles, Elise Betscher and Maria Angela Sunga got the match rolling as they took their match 8-4. Lizzie McClure and Maria Lueken followed the winning trend at No. 2 doubles, as they took down the Blue Devils pair 8-4 as well. Looking to round out doubles play with a win of their own, Mary Mullaney and Emma Wood teamed up at No. 3 doubles to earn an 8-1 victory.
Rolling into singles play, Sunga kept the ball moving at No. 1 singles as she won 7-6 (4) in the first set before closing the match with a dominating 6-1 win in the second. Betscher took a quick win at No. 3 singles, as she won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, clinching Marian's 8-1 victory of Lawrence Tech. Mullaney started fast at No. 4 singles, taking the first set 6-1, having to earn the win in the second set as she was victorious 7-5. McClure and Wood also had dominating wins as they closed singles play, as McClure won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, while Wood was the winner at No. 6 singles finishing her day with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Lueken took Marian's only loss of the afternoon, as she fell in three sets at No. 2 singles (2-6, 6-4, 10-8).
Marian won five of their six singles matches in straight sets in singles play en route to their 10th win of the season.
Marian returns to action today when they play 22nd ranked Coastal Georgia at 3:00 p.m.
